Nevadans who are not yet registered to vote have one more chance to sign up for tomorrow’s election.
Can I register the same day that I vote?
Same-day registration allows a voter to register for the first time or update existing registration on Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Nevada lawmakers made this possible for Silver State residents when Assembly Bill 345 passed during the 2019 legislative session.
What do I need to bring to register to vote?
A Nevada resident must have either a valid Nevada driver’s license, state identification card or certain tribal identification card and vote in-person at a polling location if they choose to same-day register. If you have ordered your Nevada driver’s license or ID card, but it has not yet arrived in the mail, the temporary paper license or ID card the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles gives you when you successfully apply for a license or ID will also serve as proof of identity.
Any other form of identification, such as a military ID or passport, will not be accepted as proof of identity for same-day registration.
If you have moved since you last updated your Nevada driver’s license or Nevada ID card, you will also need to bring documents proving your current residence to the poll worker when you show up to vote.
What documents can I use to prove Nevada residency?
The following items can be used as proof of residence:
- A military identification card
- A utility bill, including, without limitation, a bill for electric, gas, oil, water, sewer, septic, telephone, cellular telephone or cable television service
- A bank or credit union statement
- A paycheck
- An income tax return
- A statement concerning the mortgage, rental or lease of a residence
- Vehicle registration
- Property tax statement
- Any other document issued by a governmental agency
- A tribal identification card
Once you have provided the required identification and completed the registration process, you will be given a ballot. This may be a provisional ballot.
What is a provisional ballot?
A provisional ballot is a full ballot that contains all the contests, initiatives, measures and questions available for your precinct. It is called a provisional ballot because it can only be counted if certain provisions are met. All provisional ballots are held until all other ballots have been counted and the county clerk has verified the voter’s eligibility.
All voters, including those who received provisional ballots, can check the status of their ballot at www.NVSOS.gov/votersearch.
What kinds of tribal ID can be used to same-day register?
According to state law, a tribal ID can only be used to identify a person if it contains certain information:
- The full legal name of the holder of the card
- The date of birth of the holder of the card
- A unique number assigned to the holder of the card
- A digital photograph of the full face of the holder of the card
- The address of the principal residence of the holder of the card
- A physical description of the holder of the card, including, without limitation, the height, weight, hair color and eye color of the holder of the card
- The usual signature of the holder of the card
- The date on which the card is issued
- A reference to the tribal government which issued the card
Can I register online and vote the same day?
Yes, any Nevada resident with a valid Nevada driver’s license or ID card can register online at www.RegisterToVote.NV.gov.
However, if a voter registered online within 14 days prior to Election Day (in this case on or after Oct. 22), they may only vote in person at a polling location and must show their valid Nevada driver’s license, Nevada ID card, or tribal ID to vote in the election. This story has been updated to add video.
