Baby boomers love the Biggest Little City.
That’s the verdict of a new study, which ranked Reno No. 2 nationwide among cities with “the biggest boomer inflows.”
The study, which was conducted by consumer financial information company SmartAsset, looked at 2022 census data to gauge movement activity by people aged 55 to 74. It then ranked states based on the share of the overall population that newcomers in the age group accounted for.
According to the study, Reno saw 8,329 baby boomers move into the city last year. The boomers accounted for 3.07% of the city’s population, which was the second-highest among all the cities in the study.
“(Reno) was the second most popular destination for this age group when controlling for the size of the population,” Jaclyn DeJohn, SmartAsset managing editor for economic analysis, told the Reno Gazette Journal. “Roughly one-third came from out of state.”
Only the city of Clearwater in Florida had a higher rate at 3.79%, with 4,401 boomers moving into the city.
Reno also had the fourth-highest total number of boomers moving into the city among the top 20. Mesa, Arizona, posted the highest raw total among the top 20, with 13,623 boomers moving into the city.
All in all, boomers accounted for 62,688 of Reno’s residents, or nearly a quarter of the city’s population, according to SmartAsset.
Reno was not the only city in Nevada to make the list. Henderson also proved to be a popular destination for boomers, ranking at No. 7.
Florida, meanwhile, dominated the rankings, accounting for four of the cities in the top 10 and five of the cities in the top 20.
