LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — In an innovative move to revive international tourism in Las Vegas, Circa owner Derek Stevens is offering Canadian visitors an enticing deal: he will accept Canadian dollars at the same value as U.S. dollars at his hotels.
This offer, which effectively provides a 30% discount given the current exchange rate, is aimed at encouraging more Canadians to return to Las Vegas.
Stevens, who grew up in a Canadian border town in Detroit, recalled seeing similar offers in the past. “Whenever the exchange rate got a little too far off a par, I used to see hotels, restaurants and bars put a sign out front of their establishment that had a Canadian flag with an equal sign to an American flag,” he said. This memory inspired him to extend the same gesture to Canadians today.
The offer has sparked mixed reactions among American tourists. One visitor commented, “I know it doesn’t sound fair, but if that’s what they need to do, it’s all fair I guess. It’s a business.” Another remarked on the creativity of the idea, saying, “It’s definitely really creative thinking – it sounds like a PR opportunity too.”
Stevens acknowledges that not all Canadians will be swayed by the offer, especially those with political grievances against the U.S. “One group says, No, thanks. I’m not coming. I’m too upset with the United States,” he noted. However, he added, “The other hand, we’ve got a group that come in and said, Thank you for the offer.”
Since implementing the offer, Stevens reports a significant increase in hotel bookings. “For us, what we’ve seen, we’ve been doing this now for as we talked five days, our hotel bookings have been through the roof. It’s been overwhelming,” he said.
The offer will remain in place through the end of August, as Stevens evaluates its impact on Canadian tourism in Las Vegas.
